Are you a perfectionist and / or a workaholic? In today's world, most lawyers and other professionals are working long hours. A good job, of course, to win and retain customers, but some people go a bit overboard. You take care of every detail yourself, you work at your desk through lunch and stay at work until late in the evening? If you said yes, you're not alone.
I recently heard a speaker refer to workaholism as the only addiction that may appear on yourresume. I would add that to perfection. People (perhaps only Americans brag?) Today on workaholism and perfectionism. Both seem attractive to those managing the practice, who they are always a lawyer, believe will produce mountains of perfect work! Dream on!
What happens to the lawyer who does work incredible hours, or one who is never satisfied with the quality? These lawyers are candidates for burn out, stress and disease relentlessly and always willunhappy about lack of time for fun and family. If they are not additional time to think about alternatives they can, people who leave the law in order to find other jobs. Otherwise, they are running on empty and the feeling that too!
Is that true? Do you have a critical inner voice that tells you that you never your job well enough or fast enough? Has your critics say, your work is only useful if you make it perfect? The problem is that the troubleshooting critics are NEVER satisfied and yourDays, only longer and longer. There is no satisfaction.
My time management tips might be helpful at first but sooner or later is simply not enough hours in a day. Sometimes the work ethic in the law firm creates pressure to continue these bad habits. Law firms whose practice management philosophy promote these give more than you think.
Creativity only comes when the mind to rest is allowed. How many of us many wonderful ideas on how we are to go to sleep downin the night? It is the only time our mind to be quiet enough.
The Boston Globe ran a story a few weeks, a repair foreman for the public transport system, the system found a solution on a problem that had plagued. The foreman found the solution by observing the butcher in a butcher shop on his day off! Wonderful ideas come when a person time to relax and have a creative.
I have just my own experience with perfectionism. In the song, I have a workshopA few weeks ago. My goal was to sing a song in front of a stage in front of an audience. The night of the performance I was extremely nervous. I practiced and practiced, but sometimes I forget a lyric, and it usually happened when I was scared.
Sure enough, when I stepped on the stage my mind went blank! I took a few breaths and miraculously came back the words, so I could start. When I sing some of the words escaped me started again but I managed to get it through the songPutting in other words.
No one seemed to notice, and acknowledges the crowd by clapping me strongly. My colleagues congratulated me and told me how beautiful I was. I had my target to appear before an audience reach, but I do not have the feeling of satisfaction, which I expected because he is not perfect.
The choice of a workaholic and / or a perfectionist is in the hands of each individual. I know that perfectionism is hurting me and I want to change. A consciousefforts to change my internal messages is a first step. For those of you long hours and hate it. There is a solution for you. How do you find out what are the steps?
